A useful Hun Sen Cup history needs two kinds of accuracy: who won each documented edition, and what the competition rules meant for the matches being described. They should not be mixed. A report can establish a champion without explaining the entire format, while a current rulebook may not describe an older season. This guide builds a selected honours dataset from official reports and shows how to record the gaps honestly.
Define the scope of the honours table
The table below is a selection of editions established by primary sources. It is not presented as an uninterrupted annual roll of honour. That distinction lets the page offer verified information without inventing missing years. Each row should carry the edition label used in its source, the champion and a link that supports that specific claim.
Do not fill a chronological gap by assuming that the previous winner retained the trophy or that the league champion also won the cup. A missing row means the evidence has not been collected for that edition. It does not mean the competition was cancelled, the trophy was shared or no winner existed.
The beginning and a later reference point
An AFF article published in September 2019 states that the Hun Sen Cup began in 2007 and that Khemara Keila won the inaugural edition. The same article identifies Ministry of National Defense as the 2018 winner, with a 3–0 final victory over Police. These are useful anchors from a regional governing-body report.
Because the article was written in 2019, any title totals within it belong to that date. A researcher can use the historical facts while avoiding the mistake of carrying an old total into a present-day comparison. Publication date, event date and edition label should therefore be stored separately, even when all three appear to be close together.
Two finals that require a separate shootout field
The AFF’s 2019 final report records Boeung Ket winning its first Hun Sen Cup after a 1–1 match and a 5–4 shootout against Svay Rieng. Its 2021 report records Visakha retaining the trophy after 2–2 following extra time and a 5–4 shootout against the same opponent. These are distinct matches with the same shootout score.
A database that stores only “5–4” would lose the actual match score and make the finals appear far more prolific than they were. IFAB Law 10 distinguishes the match from the shootout. Retain both layers and identify the winning club explicitly; a score pair alone is not enough if the ordering of teams changes between sources.
Document the Visakha sequence without adding missing details
The 2021 AFF report describes Visakha’s success as a second consecutive title, supporting the previous edition’s winner as well. The AFC’s July 2023 roundup then identifies Visakha as the 2022 Hun Sen Cup champion. Together, those sources support winner entries for 2020, 2021 and 2022.
They do not provide every final’s complete match sheet. Keep the distinction visible: a verified winner field can coexist with an unfilled final-score field. This approach is especially important in multilingual publishing, where a concise translation may otherwise turn “champion identified by a later report” into a falsely detailed account of a match the writer has not actually documented.
Respect split-year editions
The AFC’s April 2024 report identifies Svay Rieng as the cup winner and describes the success as a fifth title. Separately, the CPL’s 2025 Super Cup announcement identifies Phnom Penh Crown as the 2024/25 Hun Sen Cup champion. Preserve that split-year label rather than forcing all entries into a single calendar-year convention.
A robust data model can contain an edition string plus a separate final date when verified. This avoids accidental duplicates such as “2024/25” and “2025” for the same competition edition. If sources use different labels, record the mapping only after confirming they refer to the same event, rather than relying on similar publication dates.
Format belongs to the competition edition
The IFAB Laws provide the general framework for deciding a match and describe permitted ways to resolve a drawn contest when competition rules require a winner. They do not establish the complete Hun Sen Cup format for every season. Number of rounds, regional pathways, eligibility, two-leg ties and tie-breaking procedures require the organiser’s regulations for the relevant edition.
Never infer that every cup match must use extra time because a past final did. Equally, a two-leg continental tie is not proof that the domestic cup uses the same arrangement. When the official edition regulations have not been obtained, state that limit and describe only the format directly established by the particular match report.
Keep league, Super Cup and continental events outside the cup table
The CPL’s Super Cup announcement is useful evidence about the champions who qualified for that event. However, the Super Cup itself is a separate competition. The AFC Challenge League is also separate, and its aggregate scores should never enter a Hun Sen Cup results table. A club’s involvement in several events makes competition identifiers essential.
Before importing an article, identify what event the headline concerns and what historical facts it mentions. One report may support several records, but each fact needs its own competition field. This is how a Super Cup preview can establish a previous Hun Sen Cup champion without turning the previewed Super Cup into another edition of the national cup.

Dataset quality checklist
- Keep an edition string separate from publication and final dates.
- Use a stable identifier for each competition.
- Store champion evidence even when the final score is not yet verified.
- Separate match goals, extra-time status, shootout outcome and aggregate.
- Record whether a source is a completed report, a preview or a historical summary.
- Do not infer missing years, cancellations or formats from gaps in an archive.
- Attach a date to any all-time title count quoted from a historical report.
- Review translations for changes in competition name or certainty.
How to extend the history responsibly
The next research step is to retrieve a primary report or organiser record for an uncovered edition, then add only the fields it establishes. Where two official sources disagree, retain both references and explain the discrepancy before choosing a display value. A neat table should not conceal unresolved edition labels or a score that belongs to a different stage.
This incremental method produces a dependable resource. Readers can reuse the verified rows, identify missing evidence and distinguish sporting history from editorial reconstruction. A smaller sourced register is more valuable than an apparently complete list whose annual sequence was filled by assumption.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the complete Hun Sen Cup palmarès?
No. It is an explicitly selected set of editions supported by the linked primary sources. Unlisted editions have not been inferred.
Why is 2024/25 kept as a season label?
That is the label used by the CPL source identifying Crown as champion. Preserving it avoids merging or duplicating editions incorrectly.
Does every drawn Hun Sen Cup match go to extra time?
That requires the regulations for the relevant edition and stage. A historical final report does not establish a universal format.
